IPC to BNS Section Converter: 50 Most Searched Sections

    Last updated: 18 October 2026

Short answer: The Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023 (BNS) replaced the Indian Penal Code, 1860 (IPC) from 1 July 2024. Most offences were carried over with new numbers: IPC 302 (murder) is now BNS 103(1), IPC 420 (cheating) is BNS 318(4), IPC 498A (cruelty) is BNS 85, IPC 376 (rape) is BNS 64, and IPC 506 (criminal intimidation) is BNS 351(2) and (3). The table below gives 50 of the most searched IPC sections with their BNS equivalents. Offences committed before 1 July 2024 are still charged and tried under the IPC.

    How to use this converter

    • The table lists the IPC section, the BNS section, and the subject. Where one IPC section was split, the sub-section is given.
    • “Equivalent” means the BNS provision covers the same offence. In some cases the wording, punishment or scope changed; those are flagged.
    • Every row has been cross-checked against the published comparative tables of the old and new criminal laws, including the BNS to IPC comparison used for police training, and against the bare text of the BNS.
    • For an offence, the date of the act decides the law. Acts done on or after 1 July 2024 fall under the BNS; earlier acts fall under the IPC, even if the FIR is registered later.

    Points that trip people up

    • Old FIRs and pending trials: offences committed before 1 July 2024 stay under the IPC. Pending investigations, inquiries and trials begun under the CrPC continue under it, as the BNSS savings clause provides.
    • Section numbers in notices and complaints: for acts on or after 1 July 2024, cite the BNS. Citing IPC sections for a new act can lead to objections. For example, a cheque dispute where cheating is alleged would now cite section 318 BNS, alongside section 138 of the Negotiable Instruments Act, which is unchanged. See our cheque bounce notice guide.
    • Sub-sections matter: many IPC sections became sub-sections of one BNS section. Writing “BNS 318” when you mean the aggravated cheating in IPC 420 is imprecise; write 318(4).
    • Not every change is a renumbering. Punishments were raised in several places, community service was added for petty offences, and some definitions now expressly include electronic records and transgender persons.
