CUET UG Legal Studies: 2026 Status, Pattern and Preparation

    Last updated: 18 October 2026

Short answer: As of 18 October 2026, the National Testing Agency (NTA) has not yet released the CUET (UG) 2027 information bulletin, so the 2027 subject list and pattern are not official. In the last cycle, Legal Studies was not offered as a CUET (UG) domain subject: the CUET (UG) 2026 bulletin lists 23 domain subjects, and Legal Studies is not among them. Each CUET (UG) 2026 paper had 50 compulsory questions in 60 minutes, marked +5 for a correct answer and minus 1 for a wrong one, and a candidate could take up to five subjects, including languages and the General Aptitude Test. If you are aiming for a law programme through CUET, check what each university asks for, which in many cases now means the General Aptitude Test and a language paper.

Many students still search for the “CUET Legal Studies” paper because it was a domain subject in earlier CUET (UG) cycles. This guide explains what changed, sets out the CUET (UG) 2026 pattern from NTA’s own information bulletin, and shows how to prepare for a law programme through CUET, and alongside CLAT, in 2027.

What happened to the Legal Studies paper

In the first few CUET (UG) cycles, Legal Studies was one of the domain subjects, with its own paper based on the Class 12 Legal Studies course. Ahead of CUET (UG) 2025, the number of subjects was reduced sharply, and Legal Studies was among the domain subjects reported as discontinued, with candidates for those programmes pointed to the General Aptitude Test instead.

The position for the most recent cycle is clear from the CUET (UG) 2026 Information Bulletin issued by NTA: the test covered 37 subjects, made up of 13 languages, 23 domain subjects and one General Aptitude Test. The 23 domain subjects run from Accountancy to Sociology and do not include Legal Studies. Until NTA publishes the 2027 bulletin, assume the same position for 2027.

Reports since the 2026 cycle have suggested that further changes to duration, question numbers and the subject limit are under consideration for 2027. None of this is official yet. Rely only on the 2027 bulletin when NTA publishes it on cuet.nta.nic.in, usually in the winter before the May exam.

Which paper to take for a law programme

NTA’s bulletin leaves subject requirements to universities: it advises candidates to choose subjects according to the eligibility criteria of the programme and university they want, and to check each university’s website because eligibility may differ. In practice, for integrated law programmes admitted through CUET (UG), check three things for every university on your list:

    1. The subject mapping. Which CUET papers count for the programme, usually some combination of the General Aptitude Test, a language and one or more domain subjects.
    2. The Class 12 conditions. Minimum marks and any subject requirement at the Class 12 level, which can be separate from the CUET papers.
    3. The registration step. Most universities run their own admission portal after CUET results. Missing that step means losing the seat even with a good score.

What the General Aptitude Test covers

According to the 2026 bulletin, the General Aptitude Test (code 501) covers general knowledge, current affairs, general mental ability and numerical ability, quantitative reasoning (basic arithmetic, algebra, geometry, mensuration and statistics) and logical and analytical reasoning. That is a close match with three CLAT sections: Current Affairs, Logical Reasoning and Quantitative Techniques.

Preparing for both CUET and CLAT? CLAT 2027 comes first, on 6 December 2026. Try the free online CLAT UG mock test to see how your reasoning and current affairs hold up under time pressure, then carry the same skills into CUET in May.

The old Legal Studies syllabus: still worth knowing

When Legal Studies was a CUET (UG) paper (code 317), its syllabus followed the Class 12 Legal Studies course in eight units. If you study Legal Studies at school, these units remain useful for your board exam and give you a vocabulary that speeds up CLAT legal reasoning passages:

    UnitWhy it still helps
    I. JudiciaryStructure of courts, appointment of judges and judicial review, which feed current affairs on the Supreme Court
II. Topics of LawBasic ideas of property, contract, tort and criminal law, the raw material of many CLAT principles
III. Arbitration, tribunal adjudication and alternative dispute resolutionCommon in passages on commercial disputes and court delays
IV. Human rights in IndiaLinks to fundamental rights and international conventions
    V. Legal profession in IndiaRegulation of advocates and legal education
VI. Legal servicesLegal aid, Lok Adalats and access to justice
VII. International contextInternational law, treaties and global institutions
VIII. Legal maximsLatin maxims that appear in legal reasoning passages

The right hand column is our own note on how each unit connects to the exams you will actually take. It is not part of any official syllabus.

How to prepare for CUET (UG) 2027 if you want law

    • Treat CLAT as your main exam until 6 December. The reasoning, reading and current affairs work you do for CLAT carries straight over to the General Aptitude Test and the language paper. Our CLAT 2027 last 50 days strategy sets out the plan.
    • Keep current affairs running after CLAT. Do not stop reading the news in December. The General Aptitude Test covers current affairs, and your notes from 2026 will need only an update for December to April. See how to prepare current affairs for CLAT 2027 for a note making method.
    • Adjust to the marking. CUET’s minus 1 against plus 5 is proportionally the same as CLAT’s minus 0.25 against plus 1, so the same elimination rule applies: avoid blind guesses, but answer once you can rule out at least one option. The difference is that there is no choice of questions within a paper: all 50 count, so steady pacing over the 60 minutes matters.
    • Practise on a computer. CUET is computer based, while CLAT is on paper. From January, take your practice tests on screen.
    • Build the university list early. Note each university’s subject mapping for its law programme from its 2026 admission notice, and update it when the 2027 notices come out.

Start with the exam that comes first. The Lexfolio CLAT UG exam packs include the CLAT UG 2027 Mock Tests and the CLAT UG 2027 Crash Course, covering the reasoning and current affairs skills that CUET’s General Aptitude Test also rewards.

    Frequently asked questions

Is Legal Studies a subject in CUET UG 2027?

The 2027 subject list is not out yet. Legal Studies was not among the 23 domain subjects in CUET (UG) 2026, so do not plan on it unless NTA’s 2027 bulletin brings it back.

When will the CUET UG 2027 notification come out?

NTA has not announced a date. For CUET (UG) 2026, the application window opened on 3 January 2026. Watch cuet.nta.nic.in from December.

How many questions are there in each CUET UG paper?

In CUET (UG) 2026, each paper had 50 questions, all compulsory, to be answered in 60 minutes, with +5 for a correct answer and minus 1 for a wrong one.

Can I take both CLAT and CUET?

Yes. They are separate exams run by different bodies. CLAT 2027 is on 6 December 2026, and CUET (UG) is usually held in May, so preparing for both is practical. See our CLAT 2027 UG exam pattern and syllabus guide for the CLAT side.
