A handful of central and state universities fill their five-year BA LL.B. seats through CUET UG, and most of them count a language paper and the General Aptitude Test. Banaras Hindu University asks for English or Hindi plus the General Aptitude Test. The University of Allahabad counts your language score, the General Aptitude Test and your best domain subject. There is no Legal Studies paper in CUET UG 2026, and the University of Delhi’s law programmes do not use CUET at all: they admit through CLAT. This guide shows what to take and how to prepare.

For 2026, applications ran from 3 to 30 January 2026 and the exam was scheduled for May 2026. The NTA has not yet announced CUET UG 2027 dates; if the pattern holds, applications will open around January 2027.

Universities that admit to BA LL.B. through CUET UG

    UniversityProgrammeWhat is counted
Banaras Hindu UniversityB.A. LL.B. (Hons.)English (101) or Hindi (102), plus the General Aptitude Test (501)
University of AllahabadB.A. LL.B. (Hons.)Language score, General Aptitude Test and your highest score in one domain subject

Several other central universities also offer law through CUET UG, and their test combinations vary: some want the General Aptitude Test alone, some add English, and a few add domain subjects such as Political Science or History. These combinations change from year to year, so check each university’s current bulletin before you finalise your five subjects.

    What about Delhi University?

DU’s BA LL.B. (Hons.) and BBA LL.B. (Hons.) are filled “solely” on CLAT scores, with 60 seats in each programme. If DU law is your target, you need CLAT, not CUET. See our CLAT 2027 exam pattern and syllabus.

    Choosing your five subjects

    1. Always take the General Aptitude Test (501). Almost every law programme on CUET counts it.
    2. Take English (101) or Hindi (102), whichever you score better in, unless your target university specifies one.
    3. Add one or two domain subjects you are strong in. Political Science and History are the most useful for law, because some universities count them.
    4. Keep one slot free for a programme outside law if you want a backup.

How to prepare for the General Aptitude Test

The General Aptitude Test covers general knowledge, current affairs, general mental ability, numerical ability, quantitative reasoning and logical and analytical reasoning. With 50 questions in 60 minutes and a one-mark penalty for each wrong answer:

    • Read the news daily and keep monthly current affairs notes.
    • Practise reasoning sets daily; they are the most scoring part.
    • Revise Class 10 level arithmetic: percentages, ratios, averages and time and work.
    • Do not leave questions blank. At +5/-1 with four options, even a pure guess is worth half a mark on average, and ruling out one option makes it clearly worth it. Spend your time first on the questions you can solve, then mark your best guess on the rest.

The skills overlap heavily with CLAT. If you are writing both, prepare for CLAT and add CUET-style timed practice in the last month. For the full picture on Legal Studies, read CUET UG Legal Studies: 2026 status.

Lexfolio’s free CLAT 2027 (UG) mock covers current affairs, logical reasoning and quantitative techniques under timed conditions, which is the best practice for the General Aptitude Test too. For current affairs, read our guide on how to prepare current affairs.

CUET PG is the entrance route for the 3-year LL.B. and the LL.M. at the University of Delhi and Banaras Hindu University, along with many central universities. Every CUET PG paper has 75 multiple-choice questions in 90 minutes, with 4 marks for a correct answer and 1 mark deducted for a wrong one. The LL.M. paper is COQP14. There is no separate “LL.B.” paper in the NTA bulletin: 3-year LL.B. aspirants have been taking the common General paper, COQP11. This guide sets out what the official bulletins say and what that means for your preparation for the 2027 cycle.

For the 2026 cycle, applications ran from 14 December 2025 to 14 January 2026 and the exam was held in March 2026. If the pattern holds, the 2027 application window will open around December 2026, so the time to start preparing is now.

    Which paper do you take?

    ProgrammePaperWhat it tests
LL.M.COQP14 (L.L.M.)Core and optional law subjects at LL.B. level
3-year LL.B.COQP11 (General)English comprehension, general knowledge including the Constitution and legal awareness, computer basics, quantitative aptitude and logical reasoning

COQP14 is the only paper in the NTA bulletin’s list of common papers that is named for law. The General paper, COQP11, is not law-specific, and universities have used it for 3-year LL.B. admissions. Check the paper code against your target university’s own bulletin when you apply, because each university maps its programmes to papers.

    COQP14 LL.M. syllabus

The LL.M. paper draws on the full LL.B. curriculum. The NTA syllabus document lists these areas:

    • Core: Constitution, Contract (I and II), Torts, Criminal Law, Criminal Procedure, Evidence, Civil Procedure and Limitation, Property Law, Family Law (Hindu and Muslim law, Indian Succession Act), Jurisprudence, Administrative Law, Company Law
    • Allied: Environmental Law, Labour Law, Public International Law, Human Rights, Interpretation of Statutes, Professional Ethics, ADR, Taxation
    • Specialised: IPR, Competition Law, Banking and Insurance, International Trade Law, RTI, Penology and Victimology, White Collar Crimes, Women and Criminal Law, Law relating to Children

A note on the new criminal laws

The syllabus document still names the IPC, CrPC and the Evidence Act. Since 1 July 2024 these have been replaced by the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita and the Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam. Prepare both: learn the concepts, and be able to map the important sections from the old code to the new one. Our New Criminal Laws Guide does exactly that.

Which universities use CUET PG for law

    University of Delhi

DU lists both the LL.B. and the LL.M. under its Faculty of Law in the bulletin for two-year PG programmes. Admission is through its CSAS (PG) portal and requires a CUET (PG) score in the relevant paper. For 2026, CSAS (PG) registration ran from 16 May to 7 June 2026, after the CUET PG results. Note that DU’s five-year BA LL.B. and BBA LL.B. are different: they are filled through CLAT, not CUET.

    Banaras Hindu University

BHU’s PG bulletin lists the LL.B. (Honours), the two-year and one-year LL.M., and an LL.M. in Human Rights and Duties Education, all admitted on CUET PG scores. For SC and ST candidates applying to the LL.B. (Honours) or LL.M., the bulletin applies the Bar Council of India’s minimum of 40 percent aggregate marks in the qualifying degree.

    Central universities

Many central universities also admit to the LL.M. through CUET PG. Each publishes its own bulletin with the paper code, eligibility and seat matrix, so make a shortlist early and read each one.

How to prepare for COQP14 (LL.M.)

    • Accuracy over attempts. At +4/-1, a blind guess on four options has a slightly positive expected value, but every wrong answer still costs you a mark. Answer when you can rule out at least one option.
    • Cover the core first. Constitution, Contract, Torts, Criminal Law, Jurisprudence and Administrative Law carry the paper. The specialised subjects are better used as tie-breakers.
    • Revise landmark judgments. Questions often test the holding of a leading case rather than a section number.
    • Practise at 72 seconds a question. 75 questions in 90 minutes leaves little time to reread.

    How to prepare for COQP11 (3-year LL.B.)

    • Legal awareness and the Constitution: Fundamental Rights, Directive Principles, key institutions, landmark judgments and recent legal developments.
    • Current affairs: 12 months of national news, with a focus on laws, judgments and government schemes.
    • English, reasoning and basic maths: these are scoring sections if you practise them daily.

The LL.M. paper and CLAT PG test the same core subjects, so the preparation overlaps. Try the free CLAT PG 2027 mock to check your level, and read 30 important Supreme Court judgments of 2026 for the case law.
