Exam pattern
The pattern below is the one used in the last cycle. Confirm it against the 2026 advertisement.
Preliminary exam (objective)
| Paper | Questions | Marks | Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| General Studies | 140 | 140 | 2 hours |
| General Hindi | 60 | 60 | 1 hour |
| Total | 200 | 200 | 3 hours |
One third of a mark is deducted for each wrong answer. Prelims is for shortlisting only; its marks do not count in the final merit.
Main exam
| Paper | Type | Marks | Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| General Studies | Objective | 120 | 2 hours |
| General Hindi and Drafting | Part 1 written (100), Part 2 objective vocabulary (60) | 160 | 3 hours |
| Hindi Essay | Written, three essays | 120 | 3 hours |
| Total | 400 |
ARO candidates then take a qualifying Hindi typing test at 25 words per minute.
Syllabus in brief
- General Studies: general science, history of India and the national movement, Indian polity, economy and culture, agriculture, commerce and trade, population, ecology and urbanisation, world and Indian geography, current affairs, general intelligence, and special knowledge of Uttar Pradesh.
- General Hindi (prelims and mains Part 2): antonyms, synonyms, one word substitution, sentence correction, words of similar use, and noun and adjective formation.
- Drafting (mains Part 1): precis, official and demi-official letters, office memos, circulars, reminders, administrative vocabulary (English to Hindi and back), idioms, and basic computer knowledge.
- Hindi Essay: three essays from three groups: literature, culture and society; science, economy and agriculture; and national or international events, disasters and development schemes.
Exam angle: where law graduates gain
- Indian polity carries real weight in GS. Fundamental rights, DPSPs, Parliament, the Governor, the State Legislature, the judiciary and constitutional bodies are core law-school topics.
- Drafting questions on official letters and memos reward the precise writing law students practise.
- Recent legal changes, such as the BNS, BNSS and BSA replacing the IPC, CrPC and Evidence Act from 1 July 2024, regularly appear in current-affairs questions.
- Hindi is the deciding factor. Most of the main exam (280 of 400 marks) is in Hindi, so daily Hindi grammar and essay practice matter as much as GS.
