Delhi Judicial Service (DJS) Exam Preparation Guide

The Delhi Judicial Service Examination, conducted by the Delhi High Court, recruits Civil Judges for the National Capital Territory. Being one of the most competitive judiciary exams in the country (owing to the sheer number of applicants from across India), DJS preparation deserves a specific approach.

Exam structure

DJS follows the preliminary, mains and interview pattern, with the mains paper testing the core codes — CPC, CrPC/BNSS, Evidence/BSA, IPC/BNS, Contract Act, Transfer of Property Act — at considerable depth, plus a language paper (Hindi and English) and general knowledge.

Why DJS is especially competitive

Because Delhi has no domicile requirement in the way some other states do, DJS draws applicants from across India, inflating the applicant-to-seat ratio well beyond most state exams. This makes consistent, high-accuracy preparation more important than in exams with smaller applicant pools.

What to prioritise

  • Precision in bare-act knowledge — DJS mains questions often test exact statutory wording and recent amendments closely, rewarding precision over general familiarity.
  • Current Delhi High Court judgments and practice directions, since several questions draw on recent appellate guidance specific to Delhi’s subordinate courts.
  • Sustained mains answer-writing practice, given how much the written paper weighs relative to the objective preliminary stage.

Check the current Delhi High Court recruitment notification for exact eligibility, age limits and syllabus, as these are revised between cycles.
