Jharkhand Judicial Service (JJS) Exam Preparation Guide

The Jharkhand Judicial Service Examination, conducted by the Jharkhand High Court, recruits Civil Judges for the state. Carved out of Bihar in 2000, Jharkhand has its own recruitment process and significant tribal-area legislation worth knowing well.

Exam structure

JJS follows the standard preliminary, mains and interview structure, testing the core codes in depth alongside Jharkhand-specific legislation. Hindi is the primary language of subordinate court proceedings in the state.

What to prepare beyond the core codes

  • Chotanagpur Tenancy Act and Santhal Parganas Tenancy Act — tribal land-protection laws specific to Jharkhand that restrict transfer of tribal land to non-tribals, and that feature regularly in this exam’s property-law questions.
  • Current Jharkhand High Court judgments and practice directions relevant to subordinate courts.
  • Hindi legal drafting and judgment-writing practice.

A realistic preparation approach

Start with core-code bare-act notes, dedicate focused time to Jharkhand’s tribal-land legislation (a frequently underprepared area), and move into mains answer-writing practice closer to the exam. Check the current Jharkhand High Court notification for exact eligibility and syllabus, as these details change between cycles.
