How to Prepare for Law Officer and PSU Legal Exams in India

Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs), nationalised banks and government departments regularly recruit “Law Officer” or “Legal Officer” positions through dedicated exams. Here’s how this track differs from judiciary or AIBE preparation.

What these exams actually test

Law Officer exams (IBPS Law Officer, SBI Law Officer, PSU-specific recruitment like ONGC, NTPC, SAIL legal officer posts) typically combine a professional knowledge paper (contract law, company law, banking law, labour law, and the specific sector’s regulatory framework) with a general/reasoning section similar to standard bank PO exams.

Why sector knowledge matters more here than for judiciary or AIBE

Unlike judiciary exams, which test the general codes uniformly, a PSU law officer exam for a bank will weight banking law and the Negotiable Instruments Act heavily, while one for an energy-sector PSU will weight contract law, arbitration, and sector-specific regulatory compliance — candidates should check the specific syllabus for their target organisation rather than assuming generic “legal exam” prep covers it.

Building a focused preparation plan

  • Start with the specific organisation’s past-year question papers, where available, to understand actual weightage rather than relying on a generic syllabus description.
  • Build strong fundamentals in Contract Law, Company Law, Banking Law and Arbitration — these recur across most PSU/bank law officer exams regardless of sector.
  • For bank-specific exams, dedicate focused time to the Negotiable Instruments Act, SARFAESI Act and Banking Regulation Act, which carry outsized weightage there specifically.

A realistic approach for working professionals

Many law officer aspirants are already practising or working; a 3-4 month focused preparation cycle, concentrated on the specific organisation’s syllabus and past papers, is realistic rather than the longer timelines judiciary exams typically require.
