A good score in CLAT 2027 is one that gets you a rank inside the closing rank of the NLU and category you want, and that score cannot be known in advance, because CLAT admits by All India Rank and the marks needed for a given rank change every year with the paper’s difficulty. The Consortium’s official allotment lists show ranks, not marks, so any fixed “cutoff marks” figure you see online is an estimate. Use the method below to set your own target from official data.
| Point | Position |
|---|---|
| Maximum marks | 120 (120 questions, +1 correct, minus 0.25 wrong) |
| Admission is by | All India Rank (AIR), within category, through Consortium counselling |
| What official allotment lists show | AIR, admit card number, vertical and horizontal reservation, by NLU and programme |
| Rounds in CLAT 2026 | Five provisional allotment lists were published |
| Tie-breakers | Higher Legal Aptitude marks, then higher age, then computerised draw of lots |
| Your own scorecard | Downloadable from the Consortium site for CLAT 2020 onward |
| Official marks cutoff | Not published as a single figure |
Why a fixed CLAT cutoff in marks is misleading
Students search for “CLAT cutoff” and “CLAT marks for top NLUs” and get confident numbers. Treat them with care. Three things move the marks needed for a given NLU each year:
- Paper difficulty. A tougher paper pulls every score down, so the same rank needs fewer marks.
- Number and quality of candidates. More strong candidates push the marks for each rank up.
- Seats and reservation. Each NLU sets its own intake and its own State domicile and category rules, and these change. For example, the Consortium has posted notices on changes in reservation category for MNLU Mumbai, WBNUJS Kolkata and NLU Meghalaya for CLAT 2027.
So the honest answer to “what is a good score in CLAT 2027” is a rank, not a number of marks. You convert that rank into a target score only after the exam, using your own scorecard.
CLAT score vs rank: how to read the official allotment lists
For CLAT 2026 the Consortium published five rounds of provisional allotment lists for the 5-year programmes, one PDF per NLU and programme. Each list shows the serial number, All India Rank, admit card number, vertical reservation (General, OBC, SC, ST, EWS and so on) and horizontal reservation (such as women, PwD or State domicile). The lists do not show marks.
To use them:
- Pick your target NLUs and your category, including any domicile category you qualify for.
- Open that NLU’s list in the last round and find the highest (worst) rank admitted in your category. That is the practical closing rank for that year.
- Compare across rounds. The closing rank usually moves as seats are vacated and re-allotted in later rounds.
- Repeat for two or three past years if you can, using the archived Consortium sites, to see the range.
- Set a safety margin. Aim for a rank comfortably inside the range, not at its edge.
Example: Meera, a General category candidate from Lucknow, wants RMLNLU Lucknow. She first confirms in the RMLNLU brochure which domicile and category seats she is eligible for, then checks the RMLNLU list in each round for each of those categories, notes the closing ranks, and sets her target rank from the more cautious figure. She does not convert it into marks yet.
Turning a target rank into a study target
Before the exam, the useful question is not “how many marks” but “how do I keep raising my net score and accuracy”. Practical rules:
- Track your own trend over 8 to 12 full mocks. A steady rise matters more than one high score.
- Be wary of test-series ranks. They reflect only the students who took that test.
- Protect accuracy. With minus 0.25 per wrong answer, reducing wrong answers raises your net score directly.
- Do not neglect Legal Reasoning, because it is the first tie-breaker under the CLAT 2027 instructions.
Our guide on how to analyse CLAT mock tests shows how to track these numbers.
Practise this in exam conditions. The CLAT UG 2027 Mock Tests are four full-length papers in the official pattern, 120 passage-based questions each across the five sections in the Consortium’s proportions, with original passages and explained answers, so you can measure your net score under real conditions. After the exam: estimating where you stand
- Check the provisional answer key when the Consortium publishes it, and work out your score with the minus 0.25 rule.
- Wait for the final answer key and result. Your official scorecard gives your marks and your All India Rank.
- Compare your rank, not your marks, with the closing ranks you collected for your target NLUs and category.
- Fill your NLU preferences carefully in counselling. Preference order and the counselling rules matter as much as the rank.
Your previous scorecards, if you have taken CLAT before, can be downloaded from the Consortium’s “Previous Year Score Card” page for any year from 2020.
Common mistakes
- Fixing a marks target from a social media post and panicking when a mock falls short.
- Ignoring domicile and horizontal reservation, which can change your realistic NLU list.
- Assuming the closing rank of round one is final; later rounds often move it.
- Forgetting AILET: NLU Delhi does not admit through CLAT. See CLAT vs AILET.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good score in CLAT 2027?
A good score in CLAT 2027 is one that gives you an All India Rank within the closing rank of your target NLU in your category. The marks needed for that rank depend on the year’s paper difficulty and competition, so no fixed official marks cutoff exists. Set a target rank from the Consortium’s previous allotment lists.
Does the Consortium publish CLAT cutoff marks?
The Consortium publishes provisional allotment lists for each NLU and round, showing All India Ranks and reservation categories, not marks. Figures for “cutoff marks” online are estimates by third parties.
How is CLAT rank decided if two students get the same marks?
Under the CLAT 2027 instructions, ties are broken first by higher marks in Legal Aptitude, then by higher age, and finally by a computerised draw of lots.
Can I get into NLU Delhi with a CLAT score?
No. NLU Delhi admits only through AILET; its AILET 2027 FAQ states that admission cannot be secured through CLAT or LSAT.
