Law graduates from Lucknow University, BBDU, Amity Lucknow and other UP law schools regularly ask the same question after enrolment: how to prepare for the All India Bar Examination (AIBE) without expensive coaching. Here’s a realistic plan.
What AIBE actually tests
AIBE is an open-book exam covering 19 subjects at a basic-competence level — it tests whether you can locate and apply the law, not whether you’ve memorised it. This changes how you should prepare: focus on knowing where things are in your bare acts and how to navigate them quickly, rather than rote memorisation.
A practical bare-act-first approach
- Build a tabbed, annotated set of the core bare acts: Constitution, IPC/BNS, CrPC/BNSS, Evidence Act/BSA, CPC, Contract Act, and the Advocates Act with the Bar Council of India Rules (especially professional ethics, heavily tested).
- Practice navigating your own annotated copies under time pressure — since AIBE is open book, speed of lookup matters more than recall.
- Work through previous years’ question papers subject-wise to see which Acts are weighted most heavily (Constitutional Law, CrPC/BNSS, and Professional Ethics typically carry significant weightage).
Why UP-based graduates don’t need Delhi/Mumbai coaching
AIBE’s open-book, basic-competence format means expensive metro coaching mostly sells you the same bare-act familiarity and PYQ practice you can build yourself with free past papers and disciplined practice. The exam rewards organisation of your own materials over coached test-taking tricks.
Timeline for a working advocate or recent graduate
Most AIBE aspirants balancing early practice or a job need 6-8 weeks of focused preparation: 2-3 weeks building and tabbing bare acts, 3-4 weeks of subject-wise PYQ practice, and a final week of full mock attempts under timed, open-book conditions.
