CLAT candidates often confuse percentile and rank, or assume a percentile translates directly to a rank in a simple way. Here’s how scoring actually works.

What rank means

Your All India Rank (AIR) is your exact position among all candidates who took the exam that year, based on your raw score (with tie-breaking rules applied for candidates with identical scores). This is the number that directly determines which NLU and which seat you’re eligible for in counselling.

What percentile means

Percentile indicates what proportion of candidates you scored higher than — a 95th percentile means you scored better than 95% of candidates that year. Percentile is useful for comparing your relative performance across different mock tests or across years with different difficulty levels, since raw scores alone don’t account for how hard a particular paper was.

Why percentile doesn’t map directly to a fixed rank or seat

Because the total number of candidates varies year to year, the same percentile can correspond to a different absolute rank in different years. A 95th percentile in a year with 70,000 candidates corresponds to a different rank than the same percentile in a year with 80,000 candidates. Treat percentile as a relative-performance indicator during preparation, not as a direct predictor of your eventual seat.

What this means practically

Use percentile to track whether you’re improving relative to other mock-test takers over your preparation period, but rely on your actual rank (once declared) and the specific year’s cutoffs for NLU admission decisions — don’t assume a mock percentile from months earlier predicts your exact final rank.
