CLAT quantitative techniques preparation for 2027 is Class 10 arithmetic applied to data: the section has about 10 to 14 questions (roughly 10% of the 120-question paper), set on short sets of facts or other text that carries numbers, and the official syllabus names ratios and proportions, basic algebra, mensuration and statistical estimation. Revise percentages, ratios, averages and areas, then practise caselet-style data sets under time. Because it has the fewest questions, aim for high accuracy in about 15 to 18 minutes rather than spending longer.

CLAT maths syllabus: what the Consortium says

The CLAT 2027 UG syllabus describes Quantitative Techniques as questions on short sets of facts or propositions, or other textual representations of numerical information, followed by questions. You will be asked to derive information from the set, infer from it, and manipulate the numbers. The syllabus says it requires knowledge of various 10th standard mathematical operations and gives examples: ratios and proportions, basic algebra, mensuration and statistical estimation.

In practice, this means a paragraph or a small table about, say, a school’s admissions, a shop’s sales or a city’s rainfall, with four to six questions built on it. Nothing in the syllabus suggests trigonometry, calculus or advanced probability.

Topics to revise for CLAT quant questions

  • Percentages: percentage change, percentage of a total, successive changes (a 10% rise then a 10% fall is a 1% fall overall).
  • Ratio and proportion: dividing a total in a ratio, combining ratios, partnership shares.
  • Averages: weighted averages, effect of adding or removing a value.
  • Profit, loss and discount; simple and compound interest.
  • Basic algebra: linear equations in one or two variables, forming an equation from words.
  • Mensuration: areas and perimeters of rectangles, triangles and circles; volumes of cubes, cuboids and cylinders.
  • Statistics: mean, median, mode; reading proportions from a set; estimating.
  • Time, speed and work: occasionally useful inside data sets.

Practise this in exam conditions. Quant is easiest to improve with real data sets under a clock. The CLAT UG 2027 Mock Tests are four full-length papers in the official pattern, each with 120 passage-based questions across the five sections in the Consortium’s proportions, with original passages and explained answers. Data interpretation for CLAT: a worked example

This data set is original, written for practice.

Data: A coaching-free study group in Varanasi has 60 students. 40% are girls. Of the girls, 75% took a mock test on Sunday. Of the boys, two-thirds took the test. The average score of the girls who took the test was 72 and of the boys who took it was 66.

  1. How many girls took the test? Girls = 40% of 60 = 24. 75% of 24 = 18.
  2. How many boys took the test? Boys = 36. Two-thirds of 36 = 24.
  3. Overall average score of those who took it? (18 × 72 + 24 × 66) ÷ 42 = (1,296 + 1,584) ÷ 42 = 2,880 ÷ 42 ≈ 68.6.
  4. What share of the group did not take the test? 60 minus 42 = 18, so 18 ÷ 60 = 30%.

Note the habits: write each derived number once, label it, and reuse it. Most CLAT quant errors come from re-reading the set and picking up the wrong base.

CLAT quantitative techniques preparation: how to attempt the section

  1. Decide your slot. Many students do Quant last or second last because it is the smallest section. Fix your order in mocks and stick to it.
  2. Read the whole set first and note the base for every percentage (“40% of all students”, “75% of girls”).
  3. Approximate where options are far apart. If options are 52, 61, 69 and 78, an estimate of “a bit under 70” is enough.
  4. Skip and return. If a question needs more than about 90 seconds, mark it and move on.
  5. Guard accuracy. With only 10 to 14 questions, each wrong answer costs a quarter mark that is hard to win back here.

Suppose Faiz from Hyderabad, weak in maths, gets 6 of 12 right and 4 wrong in a mock. That is 6 minus 1 = 5 marks. Attempting 8 carefully and getting 7 right gives 7 minus 0.25 = 6.75. Fewer, surer attempts often score more in this section.

Frequently asked questions

How should I start CLAT quantitative techniques preparation?

Start CLAT quantitative techniques preparation by revising Class 10 percentages, ratios, averages, algebra and mensuration from NCERT books. Then practise caselet-style data sets of four to six questions under time, aiming to finish the section in about 15 to 18 minutes. Keep a formula sheet and review every wrong answer.

How many maths questions come in CLAT 2027?

The Consortium’s CLAT 2027 UG format gives about 10 to 14 Quantitative Techniques questions, roughly 10% of the 120-question paper. It is the smallest of the five sections.

Is CLAT maths difficult?

The level is Class 10 mathematics, according to the official syllabus. The challenge is reading the data set carefully and calculating quickly without a calculator, not the concepts themselves.

Can I skip the Quant section in CLAT?

You can choose not to attempt some questions, but skipping the whole section gives away about 10% of the paper. Most students gain by attempting the easier questions accurately, since the arithmetic is school-level.

Quick quiz

Q1. A price rises by 20% and then falls by 20%. What is the net change?

  1. No change
  2. 4% fall
  3. 4% rise
  4. 2% fall
Show answer

Answer: B. 1.2 × 0.8 = 0.96, a 4% fall.

Q2. ₹9,000 is shared between Asha and Vikram in the ratio 4:5. What is Vikram’s share?

  1. ₹4,000
  2. ₹4,500
  3. ₹5,000
  4. ₹5,500
Show answer

Answer: C. 5 ÷ 9 × 9,000 = ₹5,000.

Q3. A rectangular plot is 30 m by 20 m. A path 2 m wide runs inside along its boundary. What is the area of the path?

  1. 184 square metres
  2. 200 square metres
  3. 96 square metres
  4. 416 square metres
Show answer

Answer: A. 600 minus (26 × 16) = 600 minus 416 = 184 square metres.
