The best books for CLAT 2027 are a small, targeted set: A.P. Bhardwaj’s Legal Awareness and Legal Reasoning (Pearson) for legal reasoning practice, Norman Lewis’s Word Power Made Easy for vocabulary, R.S. Aggarwal’s Quantitative Aptitude for Competitive Examinations (S. Chand) for Class 10 level maths, and a current yearbook or digest for general knowledge. With CLAT 2027 on 6 December 2026, use books for practice and background only; the real gains come from timed passages and full-length mocks in the 120-question pattern.

Before you buy: what books can and cannot do for CLAT

The CLAT 2027 UG paper is entirely passage-based. In four of the five sections you read a passage of about 450 words and answer questions on it. The official syllabus says Legal Reasoning needs no prior knowledge of law, and Quant uses 10th standard mathematics. So no CLAT book can teach you the answers in advance. Books help in three ways: they give you practice passages, they fill background gaps, and they give you a method.

Two common mistakes: buying five general knowledge books and reading none, and working through old-pattern books full of direct one-line questions. Check that any CLAT book you buy is a recent edition written for the passage-based format.

Best books for CLAT 2027, section by section

Legal Reasoning (28 to 32 questions)

A.P. Bhardwaj’s Legal Awareness and Legal Reasoning (Pearson) is a long-standing legal reasoning book for CLAT, with a 2026 to 27 edition in print. His Legal Aptitude Workbook (Pearson) is a practice book. Use the principle-and-facts exercises; skim the legal knowledge chapters only for background. If the book’s criminal law references still use the IPC, remember that the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita replaced it from 1 July 2024.

English Language (22 to 26 questions)

Word Power Made Easy by Norman Lewis builds vocabulary through word roots, which helps you guess meanings in context. Do one session a day. Wren and Martin’s High School English Grammar and Composition is a reference only if your grammar is shaky; CLAT does not test grammar rules in isolation. Your main English “book” should be daily long-form reading: editorials, essays and good non-fiction.

Quantitative Techniques (10 to 14 questions)

Revise percentages, ratios, averages, profit and loss, interest and mensuration from NCERT Mathematics for Classes 8 to 10, then practise speed with selected chapters of R.S. Aggarwal’s Quantitative Aptitude for Competitive Examinations (S. Chand). Skip chapters on topics CLAT does not use, such as advanced permutations. See CLAT quantitative techniques preparation.

Logical Reasoning (22 to 26 questions)

CLAT logical reasoning is mostly critical reasoning on passages: arguments, assumptions, inferences, strengthening and weakening. Puzzle books such as M.K. Pandey’s Analytical Reasoning (BSC Publishing) cover seating and arrangement puzzles, which appear only occasionally. Spend more time on passage practice from mocks and previous papers. Our CLAT logical reasoning guide sets out a method.

Current Affairs including GK (28 to 32 questions)

No printed GK book for CLAT covers events up to November 2026, because books go to press months earlier. Use the Manorama Yearbook 2026 selectively for background (international organisations, awards, summits, India’s institutions) and a dated monthly digest for 2026 events. Read the newspaper daily.

Practise this in exam conditions. Books do not cover the last months of 2026. Legal Current Affairs 2026 is a month-wise digest of legal developments from 1 January to 15 October 2026, with revision tables and 300 MCQs with explanations. Legal Current Affairs 2026, ₹249. For legal reasoning method and notes, see the CLAT UG 2027 Crash Course, ₹249.

How to use CLAT preparation books in the last five weeks

  1. Do not start a new thick book now. Pick one practice book per weak section and only the relevant chapters.
  2. Time every exercise. A legal reasoning passage in the book should take you 6 to 8 minutes, close to exam pace.
  3. Move to mocks by mid-November. After that, books become reference: you open them only to fix an error from a mock.
  4. Use the Constitution text as reference. When a passage mentions Article 21 or Article 14, a quick look at the actual text in P.M. Bakshi’s edition builds your background.

Ishita, a Class 12 student in Kolkata, already owns three CLAT books. A sensible plan for her: 20 legal reasoning passages from one book over the next ten days, a Word Power Made Easy session each morning, and the Quant chapters she finds hardest. Everything else stays on the shelf until she needs it.

Frequently asked questions

Which are the best books for CLAT 2027?

The best books for CLAT 2027 include A.P. Bhardwaj’s Legal Awareness and Legal Reasoning (Pearson) for legal reasoning, Norman Lewis’s Word Power Made Easy for vocabulary, and R.S. Aggarwal’s Quantitative Aptitude for Competitive Examinations (S. Chand) with NCERT Classes 8 to 10 maths for Quant. For current affairs, pair a yearbook with a monthly 2026 digest. Use full-length mocks as your main practice.

Which is the best GK book for CLAT?

No GK book alone is enough, because CLAT asks about events close to the exam that books cannot cover. The Manorama Yearbook 2026 is useful for background. A month-wise 2026 current affairs digest and daily newspaper reading matter more.

Which is the best legal reasoning book for CLAT?

A.P. Bhardwaj’s Legal Awareness and Legal Reasoning and his Legal Aptitude Workbook, both published by Pearson, are widely used. Focus on their principle-and-facts exercises. Always apply the principle given in the passage, as the official CLAT syllabus requires no prior knowledge of law.

Do I need books if I have mock tests?

Mocks matter more in the final weeks. Books are useful to build a weak area, such as vocabulary or basic maths, and as reference when a mock shows a gap. One focused book per weak section is enough.
