Students without a family network of advocates or a well-connected college often assume law internships are inaccessible to them. In reality, most internship outreach works the same way for everyone — it’s a numbers-and-quality game, not a connections game.
Where internships actually come from, for most students
Cold outreach to chambers and firms by email, internship listings on platforms like Lexfolio’s free internship programme, college placement cells, and professor referrals account for the overwhelming majority of internships, not personal connections. Connections help some students skip the outreach step, but they don’t change what makes an application succeed once sent.
A realistic cold-outreach process
- Build a target list of 30-50 chambers/firms in your practice-area interest, found through High Court bar association websites, LinkedIn, and law firm directories.
- Send individually addressed emails (never a mass CC), each one referencing something specific about that chamber’s work — see our cover letter template.
- Follow up once, politely, after 7-10 days if you haven’t heard back — a single follow-up is normal and expected, not pushy.
Building credibility without prior internship experience
Free internship programmes (content writing, legal research) that produce a verifiable certificate and real writing samples are a legitimate way to build your first credential before applying to law firm internships — employers value demonstrated research and drafting ability over where it came from.
Realistic expectations
Expect a low response rate on cold outreach (10-20% is normal, not a sign you’re doing something wrong) — the fix is sending more well-targeted applications, not taking the low response rate personally.
