Clearing AIBE is a milestone, but several practical steps remain before you can actually practice as a full-fledged advocate. Here’s the realistic sequence.
Getting your Certificate of Practice
After clearing AIBE, the Bar Council of India issues a Certificate of Practice (CoP), which — along with your state bar council enrollment (done separately, before or around AIBE) — is what actually authorises you to practice in Indian courts. Processing time varies, so check the current BCI timeline rather than assuming an exact number of days.
Enrollment versus the CoP: don’t confuse the two
State bar council enrollment (getting your enrollment number and certificate) is a separate, earlier step from clearing AIBE — many students enroll with their state bar council soon after their LL.B. and then clear AIBE within the window the BCI allows (currently two years from enrollment, though this has changed before and should be verified against the current rule).
What comes next practically
- If you’re joining a senior advocate’s chamber or a law firm, your CoP and enrollment details will typically be requested as part of onboarding.
- If preparing for judiciary exams simultaneously, having your CoP in hand doesn’t change judiciary eligibility requirements, which are set separately by each state’s recruiting High Court or PSC.
- Keep your enrollment and CoP documents safely archived — they’re frequently required for bar association memberships, court identity cards and various professional registrations later.
