UGC NET Law determines eligibility for Assistant Professor positions and, with a qualifying score, JRF (Junior Research Fellowship). Here’s how to structure preparation realistically across its two papers.
Paper structure
Paper 1 is common to all NET subjects and tests teaching aptitude, research methodology, reading comprehension, logical reasoning and general awareness. Paper 2 is law-specific, covering constitutional law, jurisprudence, international law, family law, and other core and specialised subjects at a postgraduate depth greater than LL.B. coursework typically covers.
Why Paper 1 shouldn’t be neglected
Law candidates often concentrate entirely on Paper 2, assuming subject expertise alone will carry them, but Paper 1’s weightage is substantial and a weak score there can offset strong Paper 2 performance. Teaching aptitude and research methodology specifically need dedicated preparation, since they aren’t covered in a standard LL.B. curriculum.
A structured approach for Paper 2
- Build depth in jurisprudence and constitutional law first — these carry consistent weightage and also underpin several other subject areas.
- Revise using the UGC’s own NET syllabus document rather than assuming your LL.B. coursework coverage maps exactly onto it — postgraduate-level nuance is expected.
- Practice with previous years’ NET Law question papers specifically, since the question style differs from both CLAT and judiciary-exam formats.
