AILET (for National Law University, Delhi) is often prepared for alongside CLAT, but the two exams differ meaningfully enough that identical preparation isn’t optimal for both.
Key differences from CLAT
AILET is conducted independently by NLU Delhi, not by the Consortium, with its own pattern — more static legal knowledge and direct legal-GK questions than CLAT’s comprehension-heavy legal reasoning format, alongside English, GK/current affairs, reasoning and quantitative sections similar in spirit to CLAT’s.
Legal Knowledge Needs Direct Preparation
Where CLAT’s legal reasoning tests application of principles to fact situations (often without requiring prior knowledge of the specific law), AILET’s legal-GK component more directly rewards knowing actual legal provisions, landmark cases and legal maxims — meaning dedicated, memorisation-supported study of core subjects pays off more for AILET specifically.
Shared preparation with CLAT
English comprehension, current affairs, logical reasoning and quantitative techniques overlap substantially enough that most of your CLAT preparation directly serves AILET too — the key addition for AILET is dedicated legal-GK revision (landmark cases, legal maxims, constitutional provisions) that CLAT prep alone won’t fully cover.
A combined CLAT + AILET study plan
- Follow your core CLAT preparation schedule for English, current affairs, logical reasoning and quantitative techniques.
- Add a dedicated weekly slot for direct legal-GK revision — landmark Supreme Court judgments, key constitutional articles, and basic legal maxims — specifically for AILET.
- Attempt AILET-specific mock papers close to the exam to calibrate to its particular question style, separately from CLAT mocks.
