Not every CLAT aspirant can or should pay for a mock series, especially early in preparation. Here’s how to use free mock tests effectively.
When free mocks are the right choice
Early in your prep (first diagnostic attempt), for revision close to the exam, or if budget is a genuine constraint — free mocks covering the current pattern are entirely adequate for building familiarity with question style and timing.
What to check before relying on a free series
- Pattern currency — confirm it reflects the current CLAT Consortium format (shorter passages, current weightage across sections), not an outdated pre-2020 format still circulating on some sites.
- Negative marking applied correctly (0.25 per wrong answer) so your practice score reflects a realistic estimate.
- Explanations provided, not just an answer key — understanding why an answer is correct matters more than the score itself.
A realistic free-mock study routine
- Start with one full-length free mock to diagnose section-wise weaknesses.
- Follow with sectional practice (free sectional tests or your own curated practice from NCERT and newspaper sources) targeting weak areas specifically.
- Return to full-length free mocks weekly as the exam approaches, tracking whether weak-section accuracy is actually improving.
When it makes sense to eventually pay
If you’ve exhausted good free resources and specifically need deeper analytics (percentile ranking against a large test-taker pool, more frequent current-affairs updates) in the final 2-3 months, a paid series can add value then — but it’s rarely necessary earlier in preparation.
