The best certificate course for a law student depends on the year of study. First-year students gain most from foundations and legal research, second and third-year students from drafting and the new criminal laws, and final-year and LL.M. or NET aspirants from research writing and structured NET preparation. Students aiming at corporate roles should add a compliance area such as DPDP or POSH. Pick one or two that match your stage, finish them, and be able to talk about them.
| Point | Position |
|---|---|
| First year | Law School Starter; Legal Research and Research Paper Writing |
| Second and third year | Legal Drafting; New Criminal Laws (BNS, BNSS, BSA) |
| Final year, LL.M. and NET aspirants | UGC NET Law (Paper 2); Legal Research and Research Paper Writing |
| Corporate track | DPDP Data Protection; POSH Law |
| How many to do | One or two per year that you actually finish |
| What it does not replace | Your degree, BCI-required internships or enrolment as an advocate |
First year: build the foundation
First year is when most students feel lost. You are told to read bare acts and judgments, write case comments and prepare for moots, often without anyone showing you how.
- Law School Starter. Built for law aspirants and students in the first months of a 3-year or 5-year LL.B., it gives you an orientation to the basic skills and vocabulary of legal study before the workload builds up.
- Legal Research and Research Paper Writing. Teaches you to find the right sources, structure an argument and cite cases correctly. Research skills pay off in every assignment, moot memorial and seminar paper for the rest of your degree.
Example: Aditi, in her first semester at a law college in Indore, uses the research course to write her first project properly cited, rather than learning by trial and error over three years.
Second and third year: become useful in a chamber
By the middle years, internships become serious. Seniors notice interns who can draft a basic document and who know the current law.
- Legal Drafting. Legal notices, affidavits, applications and agreements. These are the first drafts a senior will hand you. Knowing the standard structure lets you produce a usable first draft instead of a blank page.
- New Criminal Laws: BNS, BNSS and BSA. These replaced IPC, CrPC and the Evidence Act from 1 July 2024. Many older textbooks and notes still use old section numbers. An intern who can say “s.173 BNSS” for the FIR provision, not just “s.154 CrPC”, stands out in a criminal practice.
Learn this properly, with a certificate. If you are in your first year, start here: a structured orientation to legal study written for law aspirants and first-year LL.B. students. Law School Starter, ₹349: self-paced lessons, module quizzes and a 30-question final test; pass at 60% for a verifiable Lexfolio certificate.
Final year, LL.M. and UGC NET aspirants
Final-year students face two decisions: litigation or corporate work, and whether to pursue an LL.M., UGC NET or an academic path.
- UGC NET Law (Paper 2) Complete Course. For students who plan to qualify NET for Assistant Professor eligibility or Ph.D. admission. Structured preparation across the syllabus beats scattered notes.
- Legal Research and Research Paper Writing. LL.M. dissertations and journal publications depend on research method. If you skipped it in first year, take it now.
Corporate track: compliance skills employers ask about
In-house legal and compliance teams increasingly ask about two areas.
- Data protection. The DPDP Act 2023 and DPDP Rules 2025 (notified November 2025) bring most substantive obligations into force from 13 May 2027. Companies are preparing now, and a student who understands notice, consent, breach intimation and penalties (up to ₹250 crore for failure of security safeguards) is useful to them.
- POSH. Every workplace with 10 or more employees must have an Internal Committee under s.4 of the POSH Act 2013. Law firms and companies need people who understand the inquiry process and timelines.
What makes a certificate course worth adding
Before you add any course, from any provider, check:
- Relevance to your stage and goal. A first-year student does not need a niche compliance course yet.
- Current law. Criminal law content must reflect BNS, BNSS and BSA; labour content must reflect the four Labour Codes in force from 21 November 2025.
- A real test. Module quizzes and a final assessment with a pass mark.
- Verification. A certificate ID that a recruiter can check online.
- Honest labelling. A course is a course. It is not an internship and does not count towards BCI internship requirements.

Frequently asked questions
Which certificate course should a first-year law student do?
Start with a foundation course such as Law School Starter and a legal research course. Both help with every subject and assignment that follows.
Do certificate courses count as internships?
No. BCI’s Legal Education Rules 2008 require internships with advocates, courts, legal aid bodies and similar placements. An online course is not one.
How many certificate courses should I list on my CV?
Two to four relevant ones are enough. A long list of unrelated certificates looks like padding.
Is the Lexfolio certificate a diploma?
No. It is a certificate of completion issued by Lexfolio after you pass the final test. It is verifiable online but it is not a degree, diploma or professional qualification.
Should a student aiming for litigation take DPDP or POSH?
It is optional. Drafting and the new criminal laws are more directly useful for litigation. Compliance courses suit students heading to corporate or in-house roles.
