Here is how to solve CLAT passage based questions: read the passage once for its structure, answer each question from the text and nothing else, and treat the whole paper as 120 questions in 120 minutes, about one minute each. Every section of CLAT UG 2027 except Quantitative Techniques uses passages of about 450 words, and even Quant is built on short text sets. With minus 0.25 for a wrong answer, guess only after you have removed at least one option.

How to solve CLAT passage based questions: a five-step routine
- Skim the questions first (20 seconds). You then know what to hunt for: a date, a view, an inference.
- Read the passage once, marking the claim in each paragraph. Two or three words in the margin are enough.
- Answer in the order of the questions, going back to the marked line for any detail.
- Eliminate before choosing. Remove options that go beyond the passage, use extreme words such as “always” or “never” without support, or answer a different question.
- Mark and move. If you are stuck after about 90 seconds, tick it in the margin and go on.
When you learn how to solve CLAT passage based questions, remember that the skill changes section by section. Legal Reasoning asks you to find the rule and apply it; see CLAT legal reasoning MCQs with answers. English rewards the main point and tone; try the CLAT English practice passage. Logical Reasoning is about premises and conclusions.
CLAT time management per passage
A section does not have a fixed official time, so this split is a suggestion to adjust after your mocks:
- Current Affairs including GK: 22 minutes
- English Language: 24 minutes
- Legal Reasoning: 28 minutes
- Logical Reasoning: 26 minutes
- Quantitative Techniques: 12 minutes
- Buffer for the answer sheet and review: 8 minutes
If a passage carries five questions, you have about five minutes for it, reading included. Quant has the fewest questions, so if a data set looks long, mark it and return if time remains.
Practise this in exam conditions. Time management is a habit built on a clock. The CLAT UG 2027 Online Test Series has three full-length mocks, each timed at 120 minutes, with instant scores, explanations and unlimited retakes, so you can test a section split. CLAT attempt strategy for 120 questions
Negative marking makes your attempt count a decision. With four options, a blind guess has an expected value of about +0.06 marks: a quarter chance of +1 and a three-quarter chance of minus 0.25. If you remove one option, it rises to about +0.17. If you remove two, it is +0.375. So guess when you can cut at least one option, and leave a question blank when you cannot even tell what it asks.
Post-exam analyses of CLAT 2026 by Careers360 and LiveLaw described about 105 attempts as a good level and rated the paper moderate. Do not copy a number. Use your mocks: find the attempt count at which your accuracy stays above about 80%, and make that your plan. Our guide on what is a good score in CLAT 2027 explains why score and rank differ.
Common passage mistakes
- Importing outside knowledge. Especially in Legal Reasoning, where the Consortium says no prior law is needed.
- Reading the passage three times. Re-reading the whole text costs two minutes; going back to one marked line costs ten seconds.
- Choosing the most true-sounding option instead of the one the passage supports.
- Spending the first 40 minutes on a favourite section. Set a time stop for each.

Frequently asked questions
How to solve CLAT passage based questions faster?
Skim the questions, read the passage once while marking each paragraph’s claim, answer in order, and return only to the lines you marked. Practise with a timer on one passage a day, then on full mocks.

The paper averages one minute per question. A passage with five questions therefore gets about five minutes in all, reading included. Adjust by section after your own mock analysis.
How many questions should I attempt in CLAT 2027?
There is no official number. Analyses of CLAT 2026 called about 105 attempts good, but your best figure is where your accuracy in mocks stays high. Guess only after eliminating at least one option.
Does CLAT have negative marking?
Yes. CLAT UG 2027 gives 1 mark for each correct answer and deducts 0.25 for each wrong answer. Unattempted questions score zero.
