AIBE result 2026: dates, passing marks and last cycle
The BCI’s press release of 18 July 2026 fixed AIBE XXII for 29 November 2026 and gave a tentative result window of 7 to 10 January 2027. So candidates searching for the “AIBE result 2026” for this cycle will in fact see it in the first half of January 2027.
The AIBE passing marks are 45 out of 100 for General and OBC candidates and 40 for SC, ST and specially abled candidates. There is no sectional cut-off. A Monitoring Committee reviews the result before it is declared and has lowered the effective cut-off in recent cycles: for AIBE XXI it came down by three marks to 42 and 37, and 1,75,701 candidates appeared with a reported pass rate of 65.92% (Bar and Bench, 18 July 2026). For AIBE XX the result was computed out of 95 marks, with effective cut-offs of 43 and 38. Do not plan on a relaxation; aim for 60 or more.

AIBE result and certificate of practice: what happens after you pass
1. Enrolment certificate. If you sat the exam as a final-semester student or graduate on an undertaking, you must enrol with your State Bar Council and upload the enrolment certificate on the AIBE portal. Without it, the COP is withheld. For AIBE XIX, XX and XXI, the BCI extended the upload deadline to 6 January 2027 for eligible candidates (Careers360, 8 July 2026). For AIBE XXII, follow the deadline the portal notifies.
2. Certificate of Practice. Rule 11 of the AIBE Rules, 2010 provides for a COP for successful candidates. The official FAQ says the COP is collected from your State Bar Council. If the portal shows “Withheld”, the FAQ asks you to email the helpdesk with your enrolment certificate; verification takes about one to two months.
3. Bar Association and court rolls. Join your local Bar Association. Some High Courts keep their own roll of advocates: in Yogendra v. State of U.P. (7 August 2026) the Allahabad High Court discussed its roll and directed the Bar Council of U.P. to issue enrolment numbers within four weeks of receiving AIBE result cards.
Certificate of practice validity and renewal
The COP is valid for five years, as the Allahabad High Court noted in Yogendra. After that, the BCI Certificate and Place of Practice (Verification) Rules, 2015 require advocates to verify that they are still in practice, with documents such as vakalatnamas, order sheets or proof of non-litigation work. Advocates who do not comply can be listed as non-practising. In Yogendra, the High Court held that an advocate may continue to practise after the five-year COP expires until the State Bar Council publishes its list of non-practising advocates under Rule 20.4 of the 2015 Rules.
Two other points matter. In Bar Council of India v. Bonnie Foi Law College (2023), a Constitution Bench left the period of validity of AIBE results to the BCI and observed that an advocate who spends a substantial period (five years was the example) in non-legal employment may have to clear the AIBE again. And the BCI’s verification drive is overseen by a High-Level Committee constituted by the Supreme Court (BCI notice of 14 January 2024).
If you do not pass: the two-year rule
Graduates from the 2009-10 session onward must pass the AIBE to practise (Rule 9, AIBE Rules). Under a BCI resolution of 12 April 2013, an advocate is enrolled provisionally and must pass within two years. In a clarification reported on 3 August 2026, the BCI said such advocates may practise fully during the two years; if they have not passed by then, the right to practise is suspended, not cancelled, and the name stays on the roll. Practice resumes once they pass. Until they pass, they have no right to vote or contest Bar elections. There is no limit on attempts.
Between the AIBE result and certificate of practice, the only step in your control is the score. If you missed by a few marks, the fix is usually speed with the Bare Acts and more timed practice. Start with the free 50-question AIBE mock.
