Can final year law students appear in AIBE? Yes. Students in the final semester of a 3-year or 5-year LL.B. at a BCI-recognised institution, with no backlogs in earlier semesters, can register for the All India Bar Examination on an undertaking, following the Supreme Court’s Constitution Bench judgment in Bar Council of India v. Bonnie Foi Law College (10 February 2023). The AIBE result counts only once you pass all your final examinations, enrol with your State Bar Council and upload the enrolment certificate, after which the Certificate of Practice is issued.

Can final year law students appear in AIBE: the Supreme Court position
Until 2023, the AIBE was a test you took after enrolment as an advocate. In Bar Council of India v. Bonnie Foi Law College, decided on 10 February 2023 by a five-judge bench (Justices S.K. Kaul, Sanjiv Khanna, A.S. Oka, Vikram Nath and J.K. Maheshwari), the Supreme Court upheld the AIBE, held that the BCI may choose to hold it before or after enrolment, and said in paragraph 38 that students who have cleared all examinations needed to pursue the final semester may be allowed to take it on proof of that fact. Their AIBE result would depend on passing all components of the course.
The BCI did not frame rules at once, so final-year students went back to court. In Nilay Rai v. Bar Council of India (W.P.(C) No. 577 of 2024), a bench led by Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud passed an interim order, reported on 20 September 2024, directing the BCI to permit registration of all students covered by paragraph 38 for that year’s AIBE. On 20 January 2026, the BCI told a bench of Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta that it had framed the BCI Rules 2026 allowing final-year students to take the AIBE, and that the exam would be held at least twice a year. The Court recorded that the purpose of the petition was served.
AIBE eligibility 2026: the four categories
So can final year law students appear in AIBE under the current rules? Yes, through the first category below. The BCI’s registration notice for final-year and final-semester candidates (dated 27 September 2025, applicable from AIBE XX onwards) and the official undertaking form recognise these routes:
- Final-semester students of a 3-year or 5-year LL.B. with no backlogs, at a BCI-recognised or approved institution affiliated to a recognised university.
- Graduates awaiting their degree, with marksheets up to Semester VI or X.
- Law graduates not yet enrolled with a State Bar Council.
- Enrolled advocates who have not yet passed the AIBE.
Final-year students must upload the undertaking and self-attested, scanned (not mobile-clicked) marksheets for each semester: Semesters I to V for the 3-year course and I to IX for the 5-year course. A 5-year student in the eighth or ninth semester is not yet in the final semester and should wait for the next cycle.
Practise this in exam conditions. Final-semester exams and the AIBE often overlap, so practise in short, timed sets. Five full mocks of 100 new questions in the official BCI subject distribution, with solutions citing the section, Article or case. AIBE XXII Mock Tests, ₹149. AIBE for final year students: step by step
- Check the window. AIBE XXII registration ran from 19 August to 27 October 2026, so a student who missed it should watch allindiabarexamination.com for the next cycle.
- Register on the undertaking route. Choose the final-semester category and upload the undertaking and marksheets.
- Prepare alongside your semester. The paper has 100 questions in 19 subjects; the heaviest are Constitutional Law, CrPC/BNSS and CPC (10 each).
- Clear your final examinations. The AIBE result depends on passing every component of the course.
- Enrol with your State Bar Council. Enrolment under s.24 of the Advocates Act needs a law degree, so it comes after your result.
- Upload the enrolment certificate on the AIBE portal. Until you do, the Certificate of Practice is withheld; the official FAQ refers to a “Pass with Undertaking” status meanwhile. For AIBE XIX, XX and XXI, the BCI extended this upload deadline to 6 January 2027 for eligible candidates.
During any gap between your degree and enrolment, Bonnie Foi accepted that law graduates may do legal-allied work, but not appear or plead in court. Our AIBE result and certificate of practice guide covers what happens after you pass.
Common mistakes final-year candidates make
Knowing that final year law students can appear in AIBE is half the job; these slips cost candidates their result or COP.
- Registering with a backlog in an earlier semester, which makes you ineligible on the undertaking route.
- Uploading phone photos of marksheets instead of scanned copies.
- Assuming a pass lets you practise: you still need the degree, enrolment and the COP.
- Forgetting to upload the enrolment certificate, so the COP stays withheld.
- Studying from old IPC notes only; the syllabus allows questions under the old codes or the BNS, BNSS and BSA.
Frequently asked questions
Can final year law students appear in AIBE 2026?
Yes. Final-semester LL.B. students with no backlogs at a BCI-recognised institution can register on an undertaking. Registration for AIBE XXII (29 November 2026) closed on 27 October 2026, so those who missed it can apply in the next cycle.
Do I need an enrolment number to register for AIBE?
No, not as a final-semester student or unenrolled graduate. You register with the undertaking form; you upload the enrolment certificate later to get the Certificate of Practice.
Can fourth-year students of a 5-year LL.B. appear in AIBE?
No. Only students in the final semester are eligible, and the 5-year course needs marksheets up to Semester IX. Fourth-year students should plan for a later cycle.
What happens to my AIBE result if I fail a final-semester paper?
The Supreme Court in Bonnie Foi made the AIBE result of a final-year student subject to passing all components of the law course. Until you clear the course and enrol, you cannot get the Certificate of Practice.
