AIBE important subjects: three tiers

Use the AIBE syllabus 19 subjects in three tiers, by marks and by how quickly you can learn them.

  1. Tier 1, the 62 marks. Constitution, BNSS, CPC, BNS, BSA, Family Law and the Contract group. These are also the subjects you studied most in college and whose Bare Acts you will carry. Clearing 45 is very hard without scoring well here.
  2. Tier 2, quick wins worth 20 marks. Professional Ethics (4), PIL (4), ADR (4), Administrative Law (3) and Tort with MV Act and Consumer Law (5). Ethics and ADR are small, closed areas: the Advocates Act and BCI Rules, and the Arbitration and Conciliation Act, 1996. A few days here can return most of these marks.
  3. Tier 3, the last 18 marks. Labour (4), Taxation (4) and the five 2-mark subjects. Learn the headline points only: the main Acts, their basic definitions and the leading cases.

Practise this in exam conditions. 300 original MCQs across all 19 subjects in the official BCI weightage, each with the answer and an explanation citing the section, Article or case, updated for the BNS, BNSS and BSA. AIBE Practice Pack, ₹199. For full papers in the same split, the AIBE XXII Mock Tests, ₹149.

What to study inside each heavy subject

  • Constitutional Law (10): fundamental rights (Articles 12 to 35), writs under Articles 32 and 226, directive principles, Union and State executive and legislature, emergency, amendment under Article 368, basic structure. See AIBE important questions on the Constitution.
  • CrPC and BNSS (10): FIR (BNSS s.173), arrest (s.35 onwards), bail including anticipatory bail (s.482), charge, trial, appeals, with the old CrPC numbers.
  • CPC (10): jurisdiction (s.9), res sub judice and res judicata (ss.10 and 11), notice to government (s.80), pleadings, rejection of plaint (Order VII Rule 11), temporary injunctions (Order XXXIX), appeals, review, inherent powers (s.151).
  • IPC and BNS (8): general exceptions, private defence, offences against the body, property offences, with old IPC numbers. Our criminal law important questions page has a drill.
  • Evidence and BSA (8): relevancy, admissions and confessions, dying declarations, electronic records, burden of proof, witnesses.
  • Family Law (8): Hindu Marriage Act, Hindu Succession Act, Muslim law basics, maintenance (BNSS s.144).
  • Contract, Specific Relief, Property, NI Act (8): offer and acceptance, capacity, void agreements; specific performance; sale, mortgage, lease and gift under the TPA; dishonour of cheques under s.138 NI Act.

Because the syllabus pairs each old code with its new code, learn both numbers. The New Criminal Laws Guide, ₹149 has correspondence tables for 396 IPC, 217 CrPC and 95 Evidence Act provisions.

Common mistakes with AIBE subject wise weightage

  • Skipping the small subjects entirely. Ten marks from five subjects is the difference between 42 and 52 for many candidates.
  • Over-studying one favourite. Constitution is only 10 marks. Spending two weeks on it and two days on CPC is poor arithmetic.
  • Ignoring Professional Ethics. It is the one subject built for practising advocates, and its 4 questions come from a small set of rules.
  • Assuming the split will change. Practise in the official split; check the AIBE XXII exam guide for any update.
