AILET’s LLM entrance (for admission to NLU Delhi’s postgraduate programme) tests a fundamentally different skill set from the undergraduate AILET, and conflating the two in preparation is a common mistake.
What the LLM paper actually tests
Unlike the UG paper’s legal-reasoning-and-aptitude format, the LLM entrance tests substantive legal knowledge across core subjects (constitutional law, jurisprudence, contract, torts, criminal law, and others) at a depth closer to final-year LL.B. examinations, since it assumes the candidate already has a law degree or is in the final year of one.
How to prepare differently from UG aspirants
- Revise your LL.B. coursework subjects seriously rather than relying on aptitude-style practice, since substantive knowledge is directly tested here, unlike the UG exam.
- Pay particular attention to jurisprudence and constitutional law, which tend to carry heavier weightage in LLM entrance papers across most NLUs, not just NLU Delhi.
- Practice writing short analytical answers if the exam includes a written component, since LLM-level papers sometimes move beyond pure MCQ format depending on the specific year’s pattern — check the current year’s official notification for the exact format.
Choosing a specialisation
Think about your intended LLM specialisation (constitutional law, criminal law, IPR, corporate law, etc.) before the exam, since some NLUs ask about specialisation preference at the application stage, and having a genuine reason ready also helps if a specialisation-related question comes up at interview.
