CUET Law Preparation Guide: What UG and PG Aspirants Need to Know

CUET (Common University Entrance Test) is increasingly used by central and several state universities for law admissions, both UG (after Class 12) and PG (after LL.B.). Here’s a straightforward overview.

CUET UG for Law Admissions

Law aspirants targeting central universities and several state universities through CUET UG typically need a Domain Subject (often Legal Studies, where offered, or a related subject your target university accepts) plus the General Test, which covers general knowledge, current affairs, general mental ability, numerical ability, and reasoning — similar territory to CLAT’s non-legal sections but structured differently.

CUET PG for LL.M. Admissions

CUET PG’s law paper tests core LL.B. subjects at a conceptual level appropriate for LL.M. admission — Constitutional Law, Jurisprudence, Contract, Criminal Law, and other core papers from the LL.B. syllabus, making your own LL.B. notes directly relevant preparation material.

How CUET Law differs from CLAT

CLAT is exclusively for the National Law Universities and a few other institutions; CUET is used more broadly by central universities (Delhi University, BHU, Jamia, and others) and many state universities, with each participating university setting its own cutoffs and counselling process separately, unlike CLAT’s single centralised counselling.

Preparation overlap with other exams

Aspirants preparing for both CLAT and CUET UG can largely share preparation for the General Test/non-legal sections; CUET PG aspirants already holding an LL.B. have a natural advantage by using standard LL.B. subject notes as direct preparation material rather than needing separate CUET-specific content for the subject papers.

Key exam-specific points to verify

Always confirm the current year’s exact subject list, the participating universities for your target programme, and each university’s specific cutoff and counselling process directly from the NTA CUET website and your target university, since these details change year to year and vary significantly by institution.
