Whether an LLM is “worth it” depends heavily on why you’re pursuing it and what you plan to do with it — here’s an honest breakdown of when it tends to pay off and when it doesn’t.
When an LLM tends to add real value
- If you want to specialise in a specific area (IPR, international law, corporate law) and a focused LLM genuinely deepens expertise that’s hard to acquire through practice alone in that specific niche.
- If you’re planning to teach — a PG qualification is typically necessary for law teaching positions and for sitting UGC NET.
- If you’re aiming for a specific international opportunity (an LLM from a foreign university for cross-border practice ambitions, for instance) where the specific credential genuinely opens doors that a plain LL.B. doesn’t.
When it’s less clearly worth the cost and time
If your primary goal is simply “more qualifications” without a specific use for the additional specialisation, or if you’re already building strong practical experience through litigation or firm work, two additional years and the associated cost may not add proportionate value compared to that practical experience alone. Many successful practitioners in India don’t hold an LLM at all.
A practical way to decide
Ask specifically what the LLM would let you do that you can’t do without it — a specific research role, a teaching position, a specific international pathway. If you can’t name something concrete, the degree alone is unlikely to be the decisive factor in your career outcomes compared to the work experience you’d build in the same two years instead.
